In the 1950s, it was customary for Cantonese brides to eat this stewed tomato rice with a quail egg because of its symbolism. Its red colour is regarded as auspicious while the egg represents fertility. The dish was usually followed with a bowl of glutinous rice balls or red bean paste to bless the newly wed with everlasting love too.
